Photo Poem: Doing The Dishes

Doing The Dishes

Imagine, next time you stand at your sink,
In your air conditioned home, with your hot water heater
Delivering comfort and ease to your fingers
As you complain about doing the dishes –
Imagine a life with no running water,
Windows always open to the weather,
Your big stack of dirty dishes waiting
For you to carry them down to the well.
Hurry, your neighbor is watering his field,
He won’t complain about sharing the water
As you get advantage from the gushing machine
To scrub your dirty dishes clean
As you laugh and joke with your neighbor.

    • Lol, me too! But I was really shocked the first time I saw women washing their dishes outside like this – it’s very common, sadly, I couldn’t help imagining what it must be like for them, and it was really surprising to see them laughing and chatting together while they washed their dishes! ♥♥♥;^)

  1. I read this poem and really like the message. Usually all we think of is about our selves, not taking into account that our welfare also emanates from the toil and hardship of other people’s work.

    • That is so perceptive, Maria, how beautiful! The community here is very tightly knit, and so much happens outdoors, it’s amazingly different from the usual western way of life and I love catching little moments like this! ♥♥♥;^)

    • Lol, me either, but I sometimes forget, too! It’s really surprising how common this sight is out here in the countryside. And the women carry this big stack of dishes balanced on their head to go back and forth from home, it’s amazing, and really does make me thankful, definitely! ♥♥♥;^)

    • Thanks, Cybele! I see by their happy attitudes in the midst of their chores that you are right, I believe they are very blessed – certainly with patience! ♥♥♥;^)

  2. Strong the message through your verses for the most vital and valuable ethereal substance …
Aisha Dear, you made me feel guilty for the poor gratitude we show for all the facilities and amenities we get and we take them for granted. How unappreciative and egocentric we are …
Water is life and everyone has the right to life … But is life fair with everybody ?
    Love ~♥~♥~♥~ to you my sweetheart , Doda 🙂 ^ * ^

    • Thank you, Darling Doda, your sensitive appreciation of the lives of others is so tender and lovely! Yes, I agree, sometimes it seems the life is so unfair… isn’t it amazing how different the life is all over the world?! I love these reminders that I see here, they help me appreciate my life, too! But I also loved seeing these women laughing and joking together as they washed their dishes, how wonderful and merciful is God to give them enjoyment in the midst of what many of us would consider terrible circumstance! Hugs and love to you, sweetheart, happy weekend! ♥♥♥ ;^)

  3. Wise words, Aisha! I wake up in the morning and think to myself how lucky I am to be able to move my limbs, breathe on my own and have a roof over my head. Thanks for bringing ‘reality’ back for everyone! 🙂
