Global populations are rising continuously, tall buildings are rising higher, and in dense urban centers around the world, sunlight is being blocked out. Although the sun is the highest object in the sky, more and more people are literally living in the dark. But an eco-friendly solution is rising on the horizon. In response to over crowded urban conditions in developing countries, researchers in Egypt have developed an inexpensive way of redirecting natural sunlight, capable of increasing the brightness in dimly lit streets and alleys by up to 400 percent.

Islam Teaches that God Created the Sun to be of Service to Humans

“And He has made the sun and the moon, both constantly pursuing their courses, to be of service to you; and He has made the night and the day, to be of service to you.” (Quran 14-33)

Islam teaches in the Quran that God specifically created the sun and the moon to be of service to human beings. It is both allowable and advisable for humans to utilize the powerful potential of these generous gifts. And how we may utilize the services of the sun is limited only by our ability to imagine innovative answers to our solar needs.

Why We Need Sunlight

The human need for sunlight is well documented, being critical for the production of vitamin D, a necessary ingredient in the recipe for all humans’ good health. Vitamin D is important to the body for healthy bone structure. Muscles need it to move, nerves need it to carry messages between the brain and every single part of the body, and the immune system needs vitamin D to fight off invading bacteria and viruses. Together with calcium, vitamin D also helps protect older adults from Osteoporosis, a disease responsible for the progressive weakening and frailty of aging bones.

Vitamin D is found in cells throughout the human body, but very few foods naturally contain vitamin D. In the developed world, many commercially prepared foods are supplemented with it, but this is not the typical food eaten in the developing world. Our skin must be directly exposed to the sun for the human body to produce vitamin D, and most people meet at least some of their daily requirement needs this way. However, skin exposed to sunshine indoors through a window will not produce vitamin D. Cloudy days, shade, and having dark-colored skin also cut down on the amount of vitamin D the skin makes, potentially leading to serious health issues, especially in the developing countries.… Read more of my article on Edenkeeper.org
